Breyer Black StallonMay 17, 2010

I bought this Breyer horse for my 5-year old granddaughter. It came with DVD of the Black Stallion movie. She loves the statue, but realizes it is not a toy - it is made to be displayed, not really played with. It is very realistic and made to true proportions like all Breyer horses, which I have been giving as gifts and collecting for many, many years. Was disappointed though to see that even Breyer horses are now made in China. I was worried that this wouldn't come in time for her birthday, but Amazon, as usual, came through and delivered early.

The eternal BlackSep 11, 2010

Any horse lover knows the Black. To have this Breyer model, their third by this name in different molds, gives some indication of the impact the Walter Farley books have. There are of a different place and time, yet timeless. And the fellow could write some spooky stories too. I was just looking for the DVD, actually. It isn't QUITE true to the book, but I forgave them as soon as Micky Rooney stepped into the scene as the neighborhood horse trainer. He's PERFECT. Capola caught the essentials of the book. The moment of the Black's arrival at the ship is right out of the ink drawings. The island scenes show the bond that develops between horse and boy. But, sorry, with those exceptions, the book is better. I'm not sure Breyer will ever get the right mold for Cass Ole, the true star of the movie, a classic Arabian in all ways, true to his desert heritage. I have collected the Breyer horses for most of their history (over 50 yrs). I have had one break, after a 6 or 7' fall onto flooring tile. Sturdy, and except for a few years there, horses with great confirmation (build, structure). My first few, like the rearing stallion, cost about $6. My last regular model was $40, and I have the porcelain Shire -$200. A horse for every interest, every price. And I appreciate the rarer breeds. After all, I have 4-500 models, and low on funds. I have to be picky.
