Description:

This 300-piece puzzle assembles into a 20-by-27-inch highly detailed hand-drawn image of the Indian nations of the continental United States (including Alaska), northern Mexico, and a bit of southern Canada. It's a staggering but fascinating accomplishment, encouraging one to stare for hours and learn not only how many nations there were, but also to get some hints about how different Indians lived, housed and fed themselves, maintained rituals, and so on. Men, women, and children are equally depicted, and images of artifacts and icons run along the side of the picture. The back of the box proffers some historical information and challenges you to find individual items, such as a travois (a sled-like device) and a bullboat (a cup-shaped boat made from buffalo hide). The puzzle certainly encourages curiosity about Native Americans and imparts a sense of the diversity of Indian peoples. --Tom Keogh

5You'll learn a lot doing this fun, challenging puzzleNov 17, 2007
By Learning All The Time "It's Never Too Late to be what you might have been..."
We've been studying various tribes of North America, and this puzzle has greatly reinforced the kids' learning in a fun way.

At first glance, this puzzle appears very busy, and perhaps it is, but the kids have enjoyed working on it nevertheless. The puzzle shows the tribes of North America, including their lodgings, their clothes, and activities they might have engaged in. The writing that identifies tribes and rivers is enormously helpful. My kids will pick up a piece that says Zuni, and will know that it belongs in the southwest. Any piece with a buffalo on it clearly belongs in the Great Plains, and so on.

There are maps within maps too; the bottom of the puzzle has a map of the various types of Indians by region, so you could cross reference the larger map to learn that the Zuni are Southwest Indians and the Sioux are Great Plains Indians. The puzzle does not ignore the Arctic/Subartic tribes either - they too have a small inset.

My only quibble with this puzzle is that my puzzle had a duplicate piece, and was missing a piece. I didn't downgrade the rating because I assume this is a fairly rare occurrence. Amazon has a 30 day full-refund policy, so you will want assemble it before then to verify it is complete.

Even with this small risk, the puzzle is well worth owning. Anyone who enjoys puzzles or learning about Indians will love it.
