Description:

The game board is your battlefield. You have an army of men at your disposal and six bombs. Your mission is to capture your opponent's flag and protect your own. Using the majestic fortress screen as a shield, you and your opponent secretly place your men, bombs and flag on the game board. Once the armies are in place, advance your men. When you're one space away from an enemy, attack. You and your opponent declare ranks. The lower-ranking man is captured and placed out of play in the display tray. Move with caution and courage. The next piece you attack could be a bomb. And when attacked, it could "blast" your man off the board and out of play. The first to capture the enemy's flag is the winner! For 2 players. Contents includes: game board, fortress screen, 40 piece red army, 40 piece blue army, display tray, label sheet and instructions.

5Build strategic thinking, memory in suspenseful game!Jun 05, 2002

I used to play this game with my brother when we were 8-12. Its one of the few strategy games I could beat him at. Creative thinking can be rewarding or it can backfire! The key to the excitement of this game is that each player arranges their own "men" (soldiers, in varying ranks up to Field Marshal) their flag, their "spy"-the only piece that can conquer the opponents marshal, their "landmine" bombs, and miners (who can defuse opponents bombs). As you play you begin to see what arrangements are safest to protect your flag, and allow you to trick the opponent into stepping on your "landmines" while not trapping your own soldiers as you will need them to go out "into battle" as each is needed. The game is suspenseful, as in almost every move, you are engaging an unknown enemy. Will it be a lowly Corporal you conquer, or a General who captures your soldier? Or, even worse, a bomb that kills your soldier, and requires you to bring one of your Miners forth to defuse it? I recently bought this for my 11 y.o. niece (who is too good at chess for me) after one game she quickly caught on to the strategy essentials; now we have very close matches. I was surprised at how much my 6 year old nephew understood the strategy, and how eager he was to play the game.
We made up a modified version to play a shorter game, using a limited number of pieces (2 or 3 of each rank), and he is learning to play well. I highly recommend this game as one that children can play against adults and hold their own. Each game is different because of the variations caused by the placement of the soldiers. This is a "prettier" version than the one I played with as a kid. As long as the colorful stickers last, I assume it will be just as durable. This game is not for kids that get frustrated easily, because, as in chess, each player will lose many battles, and will need to sacrifice pieces to win the game. This game teaches strategic thinking, and like chess forces you to plan several moves ahead. Stratego is a very entertaining way to practice logic, memory and planning!

2Better-Constructed Version Is AvailableDec 09, 2005
By Michael Hardt "kid at heart"
I nearly bought this until I read that it involves cardboard and stickers. That's shameful.

Search Amazon's partners and other major booksellers for the "Nostalgia" edition of Stratego. It runs $4 or $5 more. It has plastic pieces with metallic paint.

This game is a blast; you and your kids are going to play it a lot.

5The Best Game Of All!May 04, 2000

Stratego is an exciting game that my babysitter introduced to us. I play against my ten year-old sister and seven year-old brother all the time. The point is to find a flag, which your opponent has hidden. But to get to the flag, you have to get through bombs and other soldiers. Each type of soldier(General, Marshall, Scout, etc.) has a rated number. The lower the number, the better. But watch out for bombs because anyone can die by those, except soldier type #8- the miner. This teaches good strategy skills while having fun in a challenge that anyone can win!

5A great strategy gameJun 30, 1999

Stratego is a classic strategy game for two people which takes place on a single battle field with you commanding a set of troops against your an assortment of pieces that must be arranged to thwart the enemy. Offensive or defensive? It's your call. Each piece has a ranking that is used to determine who wins when two pieces meet in battle. There are some pieces which have special properties and rules. For instance Bombs cannot be moved and win in almost any confrontation EXCEPT for the Spy which can unearth the bomb and disarm it before detonation.

And unlike many of the other strategy games, such as Risk, you can quickly get into a game and finish without spending hours at a time.

5StrategoFeb 02, 2002

Stratego is the single greatest boardgame out there. I personally have never stopped liking it since i was 6. It is a game of strategy and out-witting your opponent. You have soldiers from 9 up to 1, a spy, bombs and your flag. your objective is to capture your opponents flag. You can also win by having the last moving soldier on the field even if you can't get to the flag. I would recommend this game to everyone.
