5Best Pump of the Many I've Had Over the Years.Apr 08, 2010
By John P. Thiel "John T."
I bought this to replace my second Toppeak Master Blaster, and I've had several frame/pocket pumps before those as well. I don't know what drove me to buy another Toppeak instead of a Blackburn product, but I'm glad I did.

No CONS whatsoever.

PROS:

SMART HEAD: This is the first smart head I've ever had on a hand pump that actually allowed me to use it on either presta or schraeder valves without either two holes--one for each--or requiring me to make some kind of adjustments to the pump itself. On the prior two Master Blaster pumps I owned for instance, in order to switch from one valve type to the other I would have to remove three parts and reinstall them in a different configuration. And since it wasn't that easy to do so, I really wasn't willing to switch it back and forth to help some other rider in need who had schraeder valves.

On this pump, you have one hole, that's it. No adjusting, no taking it apart and putting it back together again. It's simply compatible with both schraeder and presta all the time.

EASE OF PUMPING: Other pumps I had took a lot more work, and simply couldn't pump as fast as this one can. This pump also doesn't get as hot as others I've had. You can pump really fast without tiring out your arm or worrying that the pump is getting too hot.

GRIP: This is the easiest pump to handle I've had so far. Others were made to grip either sideways or directly--using a punching motion--whereas this one allows multiple positions comfortably.

EASY TO CARRY: Easily fits in a jersey pocket, and because of the shape of the grip it doesn't settle down into a horizontal position as easily or travel into an uncomfortable spot on your back. Of course it fits in all sorts of packs as well, and for being as or more effective then a larger pump it's small size gives you even more options for where you might want to mount it on your bike or keep it in a backpack.

Several people have said to me, "I thought you were carrying a gun!" because of the shape, size, and the way it stays in place--holster like--in a cycling jersey back pocket.

DURABILITY: I've had this one for about three years now, used it tens of times, haven't done any maintainence on it, and it shows no signs of wear and tear.

SECRET COMPARTMENT STAYS SECRET: There's a little compartment in the handle with no clasp or buckle of any kind which is filled with accessories for pumping things like soccer balls. I nearly forgot it was there because I have no need of those things, but remark on it because when I first got the pump I assumed this little compartment was going to open on its own at some point and spill all its accessories. But that never happened or even came close to happening. It stays closed, yet opens easily.

PUMPING TIPS: Even if you carry a CO2 cartridge pump, you should always carry a hand pump as well. If you're going to use the cartridge, instead of starting out with it, try this:

- Put a little air in the tube with the hand pump so you can easily install the new tube;

- Once you have the tube in and the tire on the rim, use the hand pump first instead of the cartridge pump. Use both hands on the pump, instead of trying to keep the wheel steady. Pump it as far as you can before you start feeling resistance because pressure has built up in the tire;

- Then use your cartridge pump to finish it off, perhaps using the hand pump at the very end to bring your tire pressure to exactly the level you want.

- To remove this type of pump from your valve, don't try to wrestle it off because you can rip your new tube or damage the valve (and at $8 a tube or more you don't want to do that); instead, with the wheel positioned so that the valve points down, take the pump handle in one hand, and with the other hand make a fist and tap the pump so that it pops right off the valve easily with no risk of damage. The other method you can use is to push the pump off with your thumbs on opposite sides of the wheel--unless you have very long valves. Just don't try to pull or twist the pump off.

BOTTOM LINE: The best (of many) portable pump I've ever owned.

4frame pumpMar 23, 2008

This is my second Master Blaster pump. This one has one improvement over the old pump. The old pump had a metal ring that helped to clip the pump together when not being used so that it wouldn't extend. The clip became stretched and quit working on the old pump. The new one does away with the metal clip and the pump is secure in the bracket.

One drawback with the new pump is it doesn't come with the tire tools that came with the old Master Blaster. The tire tools fit on the old pump and were handy when it came time to change a flat tire. That is the only draw back to the new pump (not having the tire tools come with it). The tire tools are cheap enough to buy separately though.

5Searched long and hard.Jan 24, 2011
By K. Johnson "Plainvolks"
When I outfitted my latest bike my favorite accessories were no longer available. The mini pump I got fit the bill for being small enough to fit in the wedge but using it to fill a tire was a challenge. My second attempt was this Harpoon which is too big to fit in the wedge so I had to frame mount it. If you don't mind the size and weight compared to the smallest mini pumps, you'll sure appreciate when you need to inflate a tire. The locking SmartHead means you can glom on to the stem and put the effort into pumping, not struggling to keep everything in place. The ergo design allows for a natural hand position so you can pump without fatique. Pay attention to the black barrel lock on the low pressure stage so that you take advantage of the two-stage design. I missed that part at first and when I discovered it I became even more fond of this pump.

My mountain biking friend recommended this pump. I had the chance to use it on the trail. It is very well designed. It feels very good in the hands while pumping. It has a telescopic extension and the accesory to attach to the bike is my favorite feature since it holds the pump tightly and noiselessly. I got other products from this company and they also show great quality.

2Bulky and Hard To UseJul 22, 2011
By J. Millman
I have a Blackburn pump and thought this one that is rated to 160 PSI would be better, it is NOT- I found it bulky and hard to use.
I could not keep the nozzle attached to the tire nozzle. It would not fit my tandem without getting in the way of the peddle.
