5Good design and great posabilityDec 21, 2006

This is still a bit different than the G1 cartoon where the smoke stacks are on the shoulders, and no wind deflector cover which is new to all trucks anyway, at least not on trucks in the late 80's. But the figure is very anatomically proportional, and joints are mostly flexible, so I can put it in many really cool poses that I can come up with, and it would stand sturdily. Both guns are transformable and integrates into the truck which is a very good design touch. The G1 robots look better staying in the transformed modes, but this one is WAY COOLER to pose in your room/cube in robot mode.

I have to admit not having the trailer box/command center like the original version is a bit disappointing, I feel like I'm not getting my money's worth :-)

Some rotating parts have a distinct clicking sound when moved, makes me reminesce of when I played w/ the older robots as a little kid, and making my own sound while transforming the robots.

This might not be suitable for kids too young because some parts are very stiff and I was afraid if I pull too hard I may break something. Make sure you follow the manual when transforming, until you have the routine memorized.

Overall, this is a very good toy with a moderately complex design, and definitely a keeper for collectors.

5Much improved!Feb 08, 2007

Although I'd love to get my hands on the transformers I grew up with, I feel these new and updated versions are definitely improved. As others have mentioned, they are much more poseable than I remember them having been. Prime's got fully articulated hips, knees, elbows, etc. Great to keep your hands occupied while on long phone calls...

5Freedom is the right of all sentient beings...Jul 03, 2007

Optimus Prime. The greatest leader in the history of the Autobots. The greatest toy in the history of Transformers? Well... maybe not the VERY best (next to the Masterpiece Prime), but this figure is certainly a very nice addition to anyone's collection at a very affordable price point. Prime stands around 8 inches tall and has excellent detail and articulation. He combines a sweet bot mode with a super sleek vehicle mode for a great overall package of a Transformer. One of the best things about the figure is that all of his weapons store on the figure in both modes; one gun converts into his smokestacks while the other becomes the windsplitter on the roof of the truck. He's a sturdy block of a Transformer; he is very securely constructed and holds his shape well in vehicle mode. Some people have had problems with the panels on the sides of his arms that are the only real bits of kibble leftover from the transformation process, and I'll admit that I wasn't a fan at first (it actually kept me from buying this figure for a long time)... however, I have come to love those panels because they work so well in his alt mode and they can actually be thought of as extra movable armor panels in his bot mode. This Optimus Prime is an excellent Transformer well worth the price!

5Everything old is new againApr 23, 2007

You might be disappointed if you were expecting the exact same thing as the original 1984 Optimus Prime toy (or wanted a trailer for the truck), but this is an updated version of the original character, as opposed to a remake, and is superior in many ways. It is durable, detailed, well-articulated, and fun, especially with the truck parts forming weapons for the robot. I'd recommend it for kids and nostalgic adults alike.

4Interesting redesignOct 12, 2007

A word about the Classic series: The Classic series is a modern revisioning of the original toys and characters using modern toy technology and aesthetics. Hence, the toys will invoke the image of the G1 robots and alt modes but you'll find the designs quite different from their older toy counterparts. Nevertheless, the designers put in plenty of references in the toys to entertain the fans of old.

Classic Optimus does a very good job of evoking the image of Prime, both in image as well as in transformation. He has the familiar red & blue color scheme, the Prime style head design, front trailer windows forming the chest, arms formed from the sides of the truck, and rear towing part becoming the legs. There are of course a few differences such as Prime's lower abdomen not being the lower front of the truck as well as the design of his guns. (The gun formed from the weather vane looks more suited for Ultraman than Optimus) Thanks to modern toy designs, Classics Optimus has much more limb articulation than his G1 toy counterpart and definitely looks better as well. Although Classic Optimus has no action gimmicks, it's a fairly sturdy toy and should be able to withstand some mild abuse. Although kids can enjoy this toy as well, it's best appreciated by the adult collector with memories of the original G1 toys and cartoons.
