Clydesdale Stallion

Clydesdale Stallion

A magnificent and powerful animal, the Clydesdale is one of the most well-known draft breeds in the world. Its massive size, trademark white face, and feathered legs make the breed instantly recognizable. Its "gentle giant" demeanor has made the Clydesdale extremely popular with each generation that is introduced to it. The Clydesdale originated deep in the farming areas of Scotland. It is named after the famous Clyde River that marks the area in which it was most prominently developed. Interestingly, it is considered one of the newer draft breeds, being developed in the 18th century, and reflecting considerable influences from the Shire and Friesian breeds. Detailed breeding information, down to the individual farmers and the pastoral dales in which they lived, farmed and bred their horses, exists through the Clydesdale Horse Society. Begun in the late 1800s, the lineages give draft-horse enthusiasts an enjoyable direct link to the breed's origins and heritage. Today, although its use as a tractable and tough farm horse has diminished, the Clydesdale's stateliness and presence has made the breed in demand the world over as a special parade and ceremonial horse. The thunderous passing of a team of matched Clydesdales is a reminder to those watching of the awesome power of the equine – and a quick lesson in the meaning of the word "horsepower"!
