Jingles of Pegasus

Jingles of Pegasus Therapeutic Riding

Like the mythological winged horse for which it was named, Pegasus Therapeutic Riding of Stamford, Connecticut has been lifting “Hearts, Minds and Bodies” since the non-profit organization began in 1975.

Horseback riding provides vital therapy to those who are physically, mentally or emotionally challenged. The rhythmic movement of a horse’s gait offers benefits not achievable through traditional therapies: muscles relax or awaken, confidence is built, and the rider enjoys a powerful and liberating experience that makes spirits soar. For some, the benefit is as simple as being able to say that they participate in a sport, particularly if able-bodied siblings are participating in soccer, swimming or hockey.

One horse in particular – a 14.1-hand gelding named Jingles – has become an especially prized member of the Pegasus team. A former show hunter donated by a local family, he is the ideal therapy mount due to his gentle temperament, excellent training and quality of movement.

Today, Pegasus, accredited by the North American Riding for the Handicapped Association, is one of the leading programs of its kind with eight chapters offering year-round programs in New York and Connecticut. Thanks to a dedicated volunteer corps and countless trusty therapy horses, like Jingles, it provides treatment to more than 240 children and adults with disabilities ranging from cerebral palsy, autism and multiple sclerosis to muscular dystrophy, spina bifida, blindness, and Down syndrome.

Each student’s need is analyzed by skilled professionals so that a specific program can be designed for each individual. Along the way, families are brought closer together, and community members have priceless opportunities to give of their time and talents.

Fundraising is essential, as it costs Pegasus $175 to treat one rider for one hour, while costs to students’ families are kept as low as possible. With each sale of a Jingles model, a donation will be made to Pegasus Therapeutic Riding.
