Ruffian Racing Legend
Racing Legend
1972-1975
Undefeated in 10 Career Starts

Thoroughbred racing has yet to see another filly like Ruffian. This brilliant dark bay filly had it all: blazing speed, courage, charisma, and a tragic end. In short, everything of which legends are made. She won the 1974 Eclipse Award for Champion Two Year Old Filly, the 1975 American Filly Triple Crown and the 1975 Eclipse Award for Champion Three Year Old Filly.

In 1975, in an America obsessed by feminism, Ruffian was invited to run against the country's top colts at Belmont Park. Billed as "The Battle of the Sexes," she was set to run against Avatar, Master Derby and Kentucky Derby winner Foolish Pleasure. Avatar and Master Derby scratched however, turning the race into a match race between Ruffian and Foolish Pleasure.

On July 6th, 18 million Americans tuned in to watch a race they would never forget. Ruffian had gained a half-length lead when suddenly her right fore leg gave way. So great was her will to run, even on three legs, that jockey Jacinto Vasquez had to fight to pull her up. A team of veterinarians labored through the night, but could not save her. While America mourned, the gallant filly was buried at Belmont Park with her nose pointed toward the finish line.
